Maldive Islands stamps were not printed in a huge quantity, so it is pretty easy to collect them. Other than a few overprinted and random individual stamps on Rosette watermarkd paper, the first definitive set was printed in 1933. It was printed on paper watermarked Harrison & Sons with the watermark reading sideways (see the image below). Only a portion of the total watermark will appear on an individual stamp. The same stamps were later printed on paper with the same watermark, but instead of reading sideways it was vertical. This all makes sense until you read the catalogs and they refer to the watermark as upright or sideways. It took me a while to decipher this comment, but here is how I understand it. The upright watermark is the one shown below where the text reads sideways. The sideways watermark is where the text appears to read vertically. Not sure which is correct? Collect them both. That is what I did.

The 1933 set was used until it was replaced in 1950 with a new one. Other than a couple of design and color shades, there is nothing too challenging about this set.

The pages are from my collection, and are identified by the Commonwealth, Gibbons, and Scott numbers in that order. The page images were scanned in a larger size and at a higher resolution so you can more easily see the details used in viewing them. Feel free to select the page and let it download to your screen and save it to your hard drive for viewing. If you are using a PC, selecting the page will typically open it in Microsoft Photo Viewer (or whatever you are using as your default). From there you can enlarge the size for more close-up viewing. If you are using a phone - go find a PC or a Mac. The images are 1200 pixels wide and you will go mad trying to view them on your phone.

Please be patient if it takes a few minutes for each page to load.
